Purpose of the Position
To carry out cleaning and/or refuse bin delivery–related tasks. These duties may include, but are not limited to, street cleaning, stacking, sweeping, lane flushing, carcass removal, and refuse bin deliveries.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform street cleaning and sweeping duties.
- Clean all refuse bins.
- Wear protective clothing at all times while on duty.
- Collect all required materials and equipment needed to perform daily tasks.
- Clear all spillages resulting from refuse bag breakages.
- Clean designated streets and areas using brooms, shovels, and litter-picking tools in developed and tourist areas.
- Collect refuse by hand in informal settlements and townships and place filled refuse bags on pavements for collection by street truck teams.
- Place filled refuse bags on kerbside or designated refuse areas for collection.
- Observe all safety precautionary measures when collecting refuse bags from pavements and roadside areas.
- Report all safety incidents, equipment issues, and injuries to the Team Leader and Operations Supervisor.
- Litter-pick one side of the street at a time using appropriate tools; do not criss-cross streets.
- Remove all man-made litter effectively.
- Liaise with members of the public, service users, and officials from other departments to ensure prompt resolution of complaints and queries.
- Report all service delivery breakdowns to the Team Leader for escalation to the Operations Supervisor.
- Familiarise yourself with the designated working area.
- Distribute refuse bags to consumers according to service requirements.
- Collect refuse bags and place them in designated stacking areas.
- Proceed to stacking points and offload bags, ensuring bags face the road and are stacked in the prescribed manner.
- Stack all refuse bags and remove empty boxes.
- Collect new or replacement refuse bins from central stores and load them onto the bin delivery truck.
- Inspect refuse bins for damage before leaving central stores.
- Record all refuse bin serial numbers in the bin delivery register.
- Ensure completion of all assigned daily tasks.
- Perform any other duties delegated by the Supervisor.
- Offload new or replacement refuse bins at delivery points.
- Collect damaged refuse bins in exchange and load them onto the delivery truck.
- Ensure customers sign for deliveries and receive a copy of the delivery receipt.
- Repeat the delivery process until all scheduled bins have been delivered.
- Observe all safety and operational procedures at all times.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 10 qualification
- Minimum of 12 months’ cleaning or general work experience
- No criminal record
- Must be physically and mentally fit
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must reside within the City of Johannesburg (proof of residence or letter confirming residential address required)
Required Competencies
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, and cleaning procedures
- Understanding of relevant legislation
- Knowledge of company policies and procedures
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to prioritise and execute tasks as assigned
